Bildung is a theatrical exploration of how knowledge is transmitted and how by learning we become ourselves. “Becoming oneself” is not only an intimate and individual process, but also the collective act of self-formation of humanity. “Becoming oneself” is the human being’s need to transform, improve and pass on one’s heritage. A tension towards knowledge that is at the same time tension towards an impossibility: to become immortal.
The two performers on stage, in their shared solitude, go through the practices used by man over the centuries to pass on to posterity their knowledge and carve out a fragment of immortality. Orality, the image, writing: general forms of transmission of knowledge interwoven with mnemonic, pedagogical and creative techniques, which never stop evolving, merging, disappearing and returning.
The head of the ox painted on the wall of the cave turns into the α which in turn becomes the A of an online calligraphy tutorial, the song of the aedo is engraved for the first time in 1860 on a paper tape coated in carbon black and then spread through headphones from a Spotify podcast. Writing fades in front of the image that becomes a challenge on Tik Tok, the orality captured by a smartphone.
Memory, which is less and less inside us, is stored in devices.
BILDUNG ARCHIVE
The bildung rehearsals go hand in hand with the website www.bildung-archive. com: an online archive of attempts, tracking the tension towards improvement. The performance is a brief public moment within the performers' ongoing private effort to become themselves. A Stage Bildungsroman.
What the viewer sees during the performance reverberates in the echo of all the attempts that preceded it.
The performers - Jacopo Giacomoni and Elena Ajani - since the beginning of the research path (July 2021) are engaged in learning 4 different practices, named TECHNE, MATRIX, GYMNASIUM, HERITAGE.
Each rehearsal session of each of these practices takes place in the performer's private home, is recorded and annotated, and will become part of the online Bildung-archive that will be available to the public both during and after the performance.

"bildung è uno spettacolo volutamente poco comodo[...], non si preoccupa di spiegare, di mettere a proprio agio il pubblico, di costruire una storia, di nutrire insomma una serie di mode o stereotipi teatrali. E lo fanno non perché non vogliono, ma perché non possono: restano fedeli a una linea di ricerca eclettica ma con alcuni punti fermi. Ad esempio, il performer è un esecutore, non porta in scena un personaggio e nemmeno la propria personalità, la propria autobiografia. E questo avviene con un unico scopo: mostrare un’azione, un’azione che ha un prima, un dopo, e un adesso scenico molto precisi per noi e per loro – basti pensare al conteggio degli esercizi in aggiornamento a ogni performance. Asciuga tutto e giunge fino all’osso, Bildung, mostrando il nudo apprendimento. I performer sono come rapiti a quest’unico scopo e appena il pubblico comprende il gioco viene rapito anch’esso nel ritmo della ripetizione."

Le prove di bildung procedono di pari passo con il sito www.bildung-archive. com: un archivio online di tentativi, il tracciamento della tensione verso il miglioramento. La performance è un breve momento pubblico dentro al continuo sforzo privato dei performer per diventare se stessi. Un Bildungsroman da palcoscenico.
Ciò che lo spettatore vede durante la performance si riverbera nell’eco di tutti i tentativi che l’hanno preceduto.
I performer – Jacopo Giacomoni ed Elena Ajani – fin dall’inizio del percorso di ricerca (luglio 2021) sono impegnati nell’apprendimento di 4 pratiche diverse, denominate TECHNE, MATRIX, GYMNASIUM, HERITAGE.
Ogni sessione di prova di ciascuna di queste pratiche si svolge nell’abitazione privata del performer, è registrata e annotata ed entrerà a far parte del Bildung-archive online che sarà consultabile dal pubblico sia durante che dopo la performance.
